I have  seen many of the Forex traders who are doing their trading are making the same mistakes of using the Higher Leverages.

Leverage can be risky, but it is also helpful if appropriately used with caution, and lower spreads can be an advantage when scalping.

I'm still a beginner, so I prefer trading with a leverage of 30:1 using FP Markets tight spreads which begins at 0.0pips for most parts of the trade.

Using a lower leverage helps me in developing strategies with minimum risks and losses.

Some brokers offers 1:400 leverage on their regular accounts like the hotforex do and 1:1000 on micro accounts. However, there are many crazy offers in the market like 1:3000 which seems pretty unrealistic. New traders being unaware of the market conditions should keep the leverage low in start.

The size of leverage doesn't affect spreads or vice versa however it may cause slippage since the larger notional value of an asset you want to buy or sell, the less are chances that your trade will be executed at the requested price in full. However I rarely exceed the volume of 1 lot in my trading with Hotforex so slippage remains a minor issue for me.

Leverages are good, I mean it helps to compensate for your funds. But we should be mindful, because when the leverage becomes too high it spells trouble if the market goes against you.
